About Dayton

Dayton was founded in 1796 and incorporated in 1805. Located in the Miami Valley region of Ohio, it was named for Jonathan Dayton, a landowner who had been a captain in the American Revolutionary War. Like many Ohio cities, manufacturing and shipping have been an important part of Dayton's history. But Dayton's history and economy encompasses much more than manufacturing. It is home to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and serves as a center for research and development in industrial, aeronautical and astronautical engineering. Insurance, healthcare and education also influence the local economy.

Dayton is famous as the birthplace of the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, who built the world's first successful airplane. It is also known for the Dayton Agreement, a peace accord between the parties involved in the conflict between the former Yugoslavia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The agreement was negotiated in November 1995 at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
